At ProDerm UK, our consultant dermatologists provide expert, personalised treatments designed to clear your skin and restore your self-esteem. With the correct treatment, acne can be completely cleared and in many cases, permanently cured.
Acne can occur at any age from infancy right through to old age but most commonly appears during teenage years. It usually affects the face chest and back but sometimes other areas such as the groin or armpits.
It can be painful, disfiguring, psychologically disturbing and sometimes can cause permanent scarring or redness.
There are many variants of acne including acne vulgaris (common teenage acne), nodulocystic acne, acne rosacea, folliculitis, hidradenitis.
Acne is diagnosed clinically, by a consultant examining the skin on the face, chest and back. The features of pimples, pustules, cysts, blackheads and scarring are what confirm the diagnosis

What To Expect
Your consultant dermatologist will take a thorough medical history and examine your skin in order to make the diagnosis and classify the type and severity of your acne, focussing in particular on the scarring and psychological effect the condition is having on you.
Once the acne is classified, a treatment plan can be formulated to clear your acne. This will usually consist of evidence-based medical treatments e.g. washes, lotions and in more severe cases, courses of drug therapy.
Procedures are only required in acne for scar treatment, but with successful management of the condition, scarring can be kept to a minimum.
Some courses of treatment require ongoing monitoring for up to 6 months. If there is any residual scarring or redness, further aesthetic treatments can be recommended to improve these.
