Understanding Moles

Moles, or naevi, are collections of melanocytes, the pigment-producing skin cells. They can appear flat, raised, or warty and often develop due to genetic factors or sun exposure. While most moles are harmless, they can become bothersome if they change in size, shape, or colour.

What To Expect

Step 1: Consultation And Examination

Your consultant dermatologist will take a thorough medical history and examine your moles. The types of mole removal procedure will be discussed.

Step 2: Diagnosis And Treatment Plan

Once the diagnosis of your mole/lesion has been made, the type of surgical removal that would be best for you is planned. This would be either shave-excision or punch excision. For large moles >8mm, scalpel excision would be needed.

Step 3: The Procedure

Our surgical procedures are undertaken in a state of the art operating theatre. Minor procedures might be undertaken in our CQC-approved consulting rooms. Local anaesthetic is used making for painless procedures.

Step 4: After Care And Follow-Up

At Proderm UK, we do not believe in hidden charges so all post-operative care is included in the cost including wound checks, dressings, nursing and stitch removal.

FAQ's

Does mole removal hurt?

Most procedures are entirely pain-free, using local anaesthesia which is delivered by injection with a very fine needle.

Will I have a scar?

Surgery always leaves a scar, but by using advanced surgical techniques to minimise scarring any marks will continue to fade and improve over time. Much of the time the scar will end up almost invisible.

How long does recovery take?

Most people return to normal activities immediately or within a day or two. Strenuous sport and swimming activities need to be postponed for 7 days. Sometimes a small dressing is required to cover the wound for up to a week.

Is the procedure covered by insurance?

If the mole removal is necessary for medical reasons (e.g. the lesion is atypical-looking, painful, bleeding, catching on clothing etc.) then, your insurance provider is likely to cover the costs.

How much does it cost?

We offer the best-value consultant dermatologist fees in the UK. Pricing is transparent and will be discussed during your consultation. Fees for mole removals include surgical fee, theatre fee and histopathology totalling £795. For more than one procedure done concurrently, fees are £195 per mole removal dropping to £95 per removal beyond 4 removals.
