Understanding Psoriasis

Psoriasis is a chronic skin condition that causes red, scaly patches typically on the elbows, knees, and scalp and may be linked with joint pain. It is diagnosed by a dermatologist through a skin examination, sometimes supported by a biopsy. Whilst psoriasis isn't curable, it does sometimes clear up naturally.  With modern treatments it is possible for the skin to be totally clear and life quality to be restored.

What To Expect

Step 1: Consultation And Examination

Your consultant dermatologist will take a thorough medical history and examine the skin. They will determine the severity of the psoriasis and the effect it is having on you (or your child).

Step 2: Diagnosis And Treatment Plan

Once the diagnosis of your psoriasis has been made, the type of treatment that would be best for you is planned. This would be either topical solutions, ultraviolet phototherapy or advanced drug therapies including the latest biological treatment.

Step 3: Treatment and Medications.

Ultraviolet phototherapy is often a good option for moderate psoriasis and can take place at our clinic. For more severe cases, we offer immune-suppressive medications and biologic therapies. These treatments target specific pathways in the immune system to control symptoms and prevent flare-ups. The modern biological therapies are incredibly effective with very few side effects and can give clear or almost clear skin within only a few weeks.

Step 4: Ongoing Care & Support

At Proderm UK, we understand that treating psoriasis is a journey. Our consultants are available to support you remotely during your treatment after the consultation is finished, at no additional charge.
